讲座人:Ping Xiao(肖平) 教授
Thermal barrier coatings have been studied extensively for decades and many studies have been carried out with purpose of extending the lifetime of TBCs in service, however, the degradation and failure mechanisms of TBCs during and after being exposed to high temperature environments are still under debate. In this talk, I would like to present the TBC characterisation study which has been carried out in University of Manchester for more than a decade, and the study has been carried out with close collaboration between the researchers in University of Manchester, academic and industrial collaborators worldwide. The characterisation study has been focused on 1) non-destructive evaluation of TBCs with use of impedance spectroscopy and X-ray tomography, 2) measurements of the residual stresses in TBCs with use of Raman/fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and synchrotron X-ray beam, 3) measurements of the coating/substrate adhesion with use of the strain to failure method and four point bending method, 4) Measurement of Sulphur distribution in TBCs to understand its effect on failure of TBCs. It has been concluded that to understand the degradation and failure mechanisms of TBCs, multiple characterisation techniques should be used while both studies on manufacture and characterisation of TBCs are essential.

Ping Xiao is currently a professor of Materials Science and Director of Internationalisation for School of Materials, University of Manchester. He is also the director of the UoM-BIAM Graphene Aerospace Materials Research Centre, which is a joint research centre between University of Manchester and Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials. He joined University of Manchester, Materials Science Centre as a Lecturer in 2001, then became Senior Lecturer in 2003, Reader in 2005, and Professor in 2008. Ping Xiao did his undergraduate and postgraduate study of Chemistry in Jilin University, P. R. China. He went to Oxford University to study Materials Science for DPhil since 1989, and became a postdoctoral research fellow in Oxford since 1993. Then he joined Brunel University as a Lecturer since 1996, and became Senior Lecturer in 2000.
Professor Ping Xiao’s research areas covers 1) thermal barrier coatings and environmental barrier coatings for aero-engine applications; 2) ceramic coatings and ceramic composites for nuclear applications; 3) development of coatings and composites for application in harsh environments. His research team has been collaborating extensively with industry including Rolls-Royce, ALSTOM Power, BP, Morgan Advanced Materials, Bawtry Carbon International and Beijing Institute of Aeronautical materials, China.
Prof. Ping Xiao has been a member of Coatings and Surface Treatment Committee, and Fellow of Institute of Materials, Mining and Minerals (IOM3), UK for more than 10 years, and also an editorial member of Journal of Nanomaterials, Advance in Applied Ceramics and Chinese Surface Engineering for more than 10 years. Recently he has become an editorial member of Chinese Journal of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
